Local Schools

St Mary's Catholic Primary School

St Mary's is situated in Selby, at the southern edge near Brayton, by the A19 Doncaster/York road.  It serves the town of Selby and surrounding villages.

St Mary's School was founded in the 1840's.  It is a Voluntary Aided School which means tax and rate payers meet all the day to day costs of the children's education while the Church provides and maintains the building and retains control of the children's Religious education.

In January 1977 the school was transferred to its present location.  The school building is set in its own grounds of approximately four acres which includes a football pitch, two playgrounds a wildlife garden and a millennium garden, incorporating a sensory garden and some adventure play equipment.

The building is of a modern design but not "open plan".  There are eight classrooms set in four pairs.  Each pair shares its own entrance, toilet and cloakroom facilities, library and wet areas.

The school also contains a library, Information Communications Technology centre which has supervised access to the Internet and a hall which is used for PE, drama and dining room.

The school also has a breakfast club and an after school club to help with child care needs. Both clubs make a charge to parents for the service provided.

There are currently 161 pupils on roll. We have a small number of places available in our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes but places in our Junior section are scarce. Although we are a Catholic school we do educate children from other faiths. Parents considering our school are welcome to pay us a visit. Please make an appointment with the headteacher or secretary.

                                            Brayton Junior School

The School is adjacent to the Village Green and serves the Parish and the hamlet of Burn. Children also come from outlying farms and the town of Selby Itself.

The school attracts approximately 25 – 30% of its children from outside its normal catchment area.

The School was opened in 1969. Primary aged children prior to then attended a C of E Primary school in the adjoining site, which is still used for Brayton C of E Infant School, from where most of our children transfer.

Our school occupies a pleasant, spacious location. It has seven large well equipped classrooms, a ‘mobile’ classroom, a large hall, separate kitchen, administrative areas and a library/ICT suite. Outside there are two playgrounds and two acres of grounds, which include a large wildlife area and pond.

The Parish is now by passed to the South which has led to a decrease in heavy traffic on the A19. There are proposals for a school safety zone on Brayton Lane, reducing speed even further.

Brayton Infant School

At Brayton C of E Voluntary Controlled Infant School we seek to develop caring, responsible pupils, who are self motivated and co operative. Our school provides a happy, secure and caring environment, where every individual is respected and valued: their achievements celebrated and where Christian values are promoted. We promote positive partnerships between children, staff, parents, governors and the wider community.

The school is situated on the edge of the Village Green and serves Brayton & Burn. Children attend between the ages of four and seven, with the majority of children transferring to Brayton Junior School at the end of their third year.

The school is a Voluntary Controlled school with strong connections with St Wilfrid’s Church at Brayton and a Christian, Caring atmosphere prevails throughout the school which is set by the daily morning Act of Collective Worship.

The school grounds have been developed into an area that promotes creative, imaginative, physical and sensory play, which is aimed at children of the four to eight age range. The Millennium Garden includes sculpture by a local artist, Ailsa Magnus, as well as low level play equipment, sensory garden, Millennium Rotunda and Amphitheatre

The Head Teacher will be pleased to make arrangements for you to visit the school prior to your requesting a place for your child/children. Please do not hesitate to ring if you would like to make an appointment to look around school.
