STOP PRESS - Quality Parish Council Status

Wincanton Town Council was re-accredited with Quality Parish Council Status on 16th January 2009

Wincanton Town Council was awarded Quality Parish Council Status on 30th July 2004, first in Somerset to achieve this accolade

The Rural White Paper 'Our Countryside: The Future, a Fair Deal for Rural England' published November 2000 recognised the important role of the first tier of Local Government and proposed a number of initiatives designed to enhance the role of parish and town council.  Subsequently in June 2003 the Quality Town and Parish Council Scheme was launched.

The tests are designed to ensure that the parish and town councils are functioning as an effective, representative and active council.

** The Town Clerk - June Ruthven and her assistant Muriel Cairns both achieved the Certificate in Local Council Administration on 27th November 2003, believed to be within the top 25 clerks/assistants to achieve this.
