Welcome to the Bramham Parish Council Website
Bramham (or more properly Bramham cum Oglethorpe) is a thriving village of 1800 people. It is located just off the A1(M) about 4 miles south of Wetherby, and is about half way between Leeds and York.
The village of Bramham certainly existed in Saxon times as is clear from the large oval shaped churchyard. The importance of the manor of Bramham is recorded in the Domesday Survey (1086).
The Church is the oldest building in the village. Dedicated to All Saints it was built in the early 12th century, and was enlarged from a small unaisled building with a tower to its present shape, with two aisles and a spire during the latter half of the thirteenth century. Some of the dead from the battle of Bramham Moor (1408) were buried in communal graves at the east end of the churchyard. Also thought to be buried in these communal graves were some of the casualties of the Battle of Towton (1461), the bloodiest battle ever to be fought on English soil during the Wars of the Roses. The climax to the English Civil war came at the Battle of Marston Moor (1644). Once again, victims were certainly buried in Bramham, and by then Parish records existed to name three such soldiers.
Nearby Bramham Park was built in the period 1700-1710 by Robert Benson, first Lord Bingley. During the reign of Queen Anne, much of the surrounding moor was enclosed into delightful parkland and tenanted farms. The original house was badly gutted by fire in 1828 and not restored until 1906-14. The house is now in the ownership of the Lane Fox family, descendants of Robert Benson, and the grounds are open to the public during the summer months. The estate is also well known for hosting an international three day equestrian event (Bramham Horse Trials), and more recently as the site of the Leeds Festival.
Since the diversion of the A1 (Great North Road) away from the centre of the village in 1964 it has become a popular residential area, a rural community within the metropolitan district of Leeds.
