The Standby Volunteer Group
The Surgery, Cock Lane, Bradfield, Berkshire RG7 6HR Tel: 0118 974 4972
Providers of voluntary transport for residents to meet their medical needs.
The aim of the STANDBY GROUP is to attempt to provide a volunteer driver, using their own car, for persons who do not have access to or cannot use public transport to take them to Hospital and/or Surgery appointments, including Chiropodists, Dentists and Opticians etc, and return them to their home.
STANDBY covers an area from Stanford Dingley, Bradfield, Southend, Beenham, Theale, Calcot and parts of Tilehurst. Our office at Cock Lane Surgery is manned by volunteers on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10.00 am and 12 noon. At other times there is an answerphone which records requests for assistance. No call is left unanswered.
STANDBY volunteer drivers are provided with parking permits which allow them to park as close as possible to the Hospital or Clinic that the patient is attending.
STANDBY has a small number of volunteer drivers who live locally. They receive a mileage allowance to cover fuel costs and fair wear and tear on their vehicle, this is calculated from leaving home until they return.
STANDBY is supported by grants from parish councils and other fund raising activities, but mainly from patients using this facility. Patients are expected to make a contribution either by cash or tokens towards the expenses of the driver, who is giving of his/her time without reward.
