DETAILED BELOW ARE SOME OF THE MANY EVENTS THAT THE TOWN MAYOR HAS ATTENDED SINCE HER ELECTION 

Friday 30th July – “A Night at the Opera”, Blandford Forum Town Council

The Mayor of Ferndown accepted an invitation to a “A Night at the Opera”, presented by The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals in support of the Mayor of Blandford Forum’s Charities, including ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Girl Guides and Brownies.

Thursday 29th July – ‘Fun Day’, Synergy East Dorset (East Dorset Housing Association)

Synergy East Dorset’s ‘Fun Day’, sponsored by local businesses and officially opened by the Mayor, provided something ‘for all the family’.  All the association’s residents were invited to enjoy a day of fun & entertainment, with competitions and demonstrations for the children, and information on local facilities and services for the adults. Help & Care, POPPs, the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Fire Service and Community Police Officers were just a few of those who attended and gave advice.

Wednesday 28th July – ‘100 year celebrations’,  Lloyds Bank Ferndown

Cllr Mrs Read was pleased to join staff and guests at Lloyds Bank for a short lunchtime event to help mark this milestone of Lloyds banking history in Ferndown.

Saturday 24th July – ‘Fun Day’, Heatherlands Community Association

The Mayor spent an enjoyable few hours at the Heatherlands Community Association’s ‘Fun Day’; fun and activities for all, from 10am – 10pm.  The afternoon included a ‘cream tea dance’ with music from the 40’s & 50’s.

Wednesday 21st July – Summer Concert, Ferndown Middle School

On the evening of July 21st 2010, Ferndown Middle School’s music department presented their summer concert on the theme of ‘A Night at the Movies’.  The Mayor was extremely pleased to accept the invitation to a full and varied programme of music; theme tunes such as James Bond, Indiana Jones, Titanic and The Pink Panther, as well as well known songs from the films were included. The staff, students and teachers had clearly worked extremely hard to create such an enjoyable evening.

Sunday 18th July – Civic Service, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council

Cllr Paul Kimber, Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, welcomed Cllr Mrs Read and her escort to his Civic Service, held at Easton Methodist Church, Portland.  Several civic and borough guests attended the service to wish the Mayor well during his term of office.

Noon Saturday 17th to Noon  Sunday 18th July 2010 - Cancer Research, Relay for Life

Ferndown’s Relay for Life, now in its fourth year, took place on the Ferndown Sports Fields behind the Leisure Centre.  The Mayor was delighted to be invited to cut the ribbon at 12 noon, at the start of the Survivors Lap of Honour which launches this major fundraising event.  It was also a chance for Cllr Mrs Read to spend time with team members at the start of their 24hr marathon, before rejoining them later for the ‘Candle of Hope Ceremony’ at 10pm, which honours those affected by cancer.  The event closed at noon on Sunday, with an opportunity to congratulate participants and thank the organisers for their hard work in producing such a successful and worthwhile event.

Monday 12th July 2010 – Synergy Housing -  Gardening Awards

With the help of sponsorship from local garden centres, East Dorset Housing Association (now part of Synergy Housing), with some 3500 households, organises an annual Gardening Competition for residents.    Competition is very fierce with a great many entries. The Town Mayor of Ferndown was privileged to be asked to attend the presentation ceremony and to present winning prizes to a number of worthy recipients.

Saturday 10th July 2010 – Ferndown Carnival

The Town Mayor was very happy to accept a request from the Ferndown Carnival Committee to take part in the opening procession and enjoy the afternoon’s entertainment and activities on King George V Fields after the main procession.   The events drew the usual enthusiastic and supportive crowds and with thanks to local businesses for their kind donation of raffle prizes, Cllr Mrs Read, council members and staff, went on during the afternoon to raise nearly £100 for the Mayor’s charity, the Ferndown Stroke Association.  

Friday 9th July – Ferndown Upper School, Yr 13 Graduation Ceremony 2010

This year’s graduation ceremony was held at the Carrington House Hotel, Bournemouth, providing an opportunity to bring together students, their families, organisations and individuals who have contributed to the students’ education.  It was a particular pleasure for the Mayor to be invited to this year’s ceremony and to celebrate many notable achievements.  Ferndown Art Students have worked closely with the town council during the past year to progress various ideas in relation to improving the local environment.   The new sculptures and works of art in the town’s innovative Sculpture Park, within Millennium Park, are just some examples of their work.

Thursday 8th July – Cherry Tree Nursery Guests’ Open Day, Northbourne

Cherry Tree Nursery is a commercial plant nursery, the first project of the registered charity SWOP (Sheltered Work Opportunities Project), offering people with long-term mental health problems the chance to gain or recover skills, confidence and self-esteem. The Mayor was delighted to be invited to the Nursery’s Open Day, to meet volunteers and staff, view the plants and work undertaken. The day also provided an opportunity to learn more about the Nursery’s biggest challenge to date; a fundraising project to replace their current donated – and now dilapidated - buildings with low-energy, sustainable buildings made from locally sourced materials. 

Monday 5th July 2010 - Presentation to Mr P Oggelsby

Presntation to Mr P OggelsbyPeter Ogglesby recently resigned as a member of Ferndown Town Council, however, Council Members wished to mark the fact that he had served the town as Mayor in 2005/6, as well as serving as Deputy Mayor in 2004/5 and 2007/8. He had been a Town Councillor from July 1999 to May of this year. At their meeting held last Monday, 5th July, Peter was presented with an engraved Town Shield by the current Mayor, Councillor Mrs Jean Read, in thanks for all the work he had carried out as a member of the Council and the various fundraising events he had instigated in his period of office.

Sunday 4th July – Ceremony of the Keys, Portland Castle

Cllr Mrs Read and her Escort accepted an invitation from the Town Mayor of Portland and Portland Town Council to be part of this annual ceremony which continues a tradition recognising the initial granting of ‘Royal Borough’ by Henry VIII. The ceremony took place at Portland Castle where the ‘keys of the island’ were handed to the new Mayor, Cllr David Thurston.

Sunday 4th July – Girlguiding Dorset – Pageant and Thanksgiving

The Deputy Town Mayor, Cllr Steven Lugg, attended this occasion on behalf of the Mayor.  The event, held at Bournemouth FC Stadium, is one of several events planned to celebrate 100 years of guiding. The Deputy Mayor commented that he was proud to be representing Ferndown on this occasion; ‘the organisation was superb, the atmosphere friendly and fun and the girls obviously enjoying themselves!’

Saturday 3rd July 2010 – Official Opening of Cats Protection New Homing Centre, Ferndown

On Saturday 3rd July, Cats Protection invited the Town Mayor to take part in the official opening of the new Homing Centre in Ferndown.  Work to create the facility was started with an appeal in April 2009; the centre is a totally new initiative for the charity, where only cats ready for adoption will be held.  51 cats had already been found new homes since the centre opened for business in late May and a further 25 were reserved on the day.  Approximately 500 people attended and the Mayor was pleased to be invited to officially cut the ribbon and to wish the Centre continued success with their venture. Saturday 3rd July 2010 – Summer Blast Fun Day

Over 2.500 people enjoyed this Fun Day, held at King George V Playing Fields and Ferndown Upper School.   The event was the brainchild of two local students and included displays, workshops and demonstrations from clubs and societies across East Dorset.  The ‘Skate Fest’ featured demonstrations from Team Extreme and competitions and the Town Mayor presented awards to the youngsters who competed in the BMX and skate challenges.

Wednesday 30th June 2010 – The Charlotte Read Award for Endeavour

The Charlotte Read Award For Endeavor was Awarded by The Mayor of Ferndown Councillor Jean Read to Ferndown Jitsu Club Instructor Katie Dudley at the Heatherlands Community Centre on Wednesday 30 June 2010.  The Award was given for her out-standing commitment and all the time and effort that Katie has given to the Ferndown Jitsu Club over the past 10 years and she has always been there to give a helping hand on all occasions and at all events.  All students in the club at present started under Katie’s Instruction as a Novice and it is has been with her help that many have progressed to Grade and Rank that they now hold! 

Wednesday 30th June 2010 – Re-opening of the Sports Pavilion Changing Rooms

The Mayor hands Andy Tibbles an award for his effortsThe Town Mayor had been invited to attend the re-opening of the Sports Pavilion at the King Georges Fields by Ferndown Sports FC.  The football club led by the club secretary, Mr Andrew Tibbles, managed to raise over £35,000 to cover the cost of the dilapidated building.  Over 28 organisations and businesses contributed by way of sponsorship and materials to the refurbishment.  The building has been completely transformed into a first class changing facility.


MAYORS COMMENT:  "Since May I have attended some 14 different functions on behalf of the town and have met the new mayors from many nearby towns.  Some towns keep old traditions going and at my visit to Dorchester the Town Clerk was wearing a gown and wig - I am sure this would suit our Town Clerk, Mr Ian Jones!  I have been to Riffs Youth Club and was very impressed with what goes on there to provide activities for young people.  I have also visited Amberwood House for "Cloggies and Cream Teas" as well as a 100th birthday celebration and many other events."


Saturday 12th June 2010 – Ferndown & District Horticultural Association, Summer Show

Ferndown Horticultural Awards PresentationThe Town Mayor was invited to attend this annual event at the Ferndown Village Hall in Church Road to present trophies to the winning exhibitors.  The Mayor was very impressed with the excellent floral displays.  Councillor Mrs Read is pictured with some of the winning entrants.

 

Saturday 12th June 2010 – Opening of the Sculpture Park, King Georges Fields

The Town Mayor was invited to the formal unveiling of the Sculpture Trial in the Millennium Park at the King Georges Fields.  The Town Council’s Creative Working Party had been working closely with the Ferndown Upper and Middle Schools to create a Ferndown Memorial, Garden of Memories and innovative new Sculpture Park containing sculptures and three dimensional works of art that reflect our local community, its people, its history, its environment and its activities.  The Town Mayor is pictured with Mr Gerry Clarke who has been instrumental in driving this project forward.

Saturday 5th June 2010 – Amberwood House, Cloggies & Cream Teas Gala

The Town Mayor and her escort were invited a Cloggies and Cream Teas Gala at Amberwood House.  Entertainment was provided by the ‘Cloggies’ and side stalls were raising funds for the local Red Cross Charity. 

 

 

Monday 24th May 2010Dorchester Town Council Mayor Making and Mayoral Reception

Councillor Mrs Jean Read and her escort Mr Fred Read were invited to the Corn Exchange in Dorchester to take part in the Mayor Making for that Town.  Councillor L M Philips MBE was elected to the office and Town Mayor and Cllr Mrs Read attended a small reception after the ceremony.

Sunday 23rd May 2010 – Borough of Poole Civic Church Service, St James Church

The Town Mayor was invited to attend this event and represent the people of Ferndown in a parade along Poole Quay, led by the Poole Sea Cadets Band following a church service. 

Thursday 20th May 2010 – Meeting the Creative Club at Riffs Youth Centre, Church Road

The Town Mayor was invited to Riffs to view the new computer equipment that had been purchased for use by the Youth Club members.  The IT equipment was to be used by the members and was partially funded by Ferndown Town Council.

 

 

Monday 17th May 2010 – Annual General Meeting

The the Town Council’s Annual General Meeting held on the 17th May 2010 the first item of business was to elect the Town Mayor for the 2010/2011 municipal year.  It was unanimously agreed by all present that the Mayor would be Councillor Mrs Jean Read.
